Engineer/Scientist/Technical Officer – Fuel Packaging

Reporting to the Manager, Fuel Handling and Sealing System Design, provide support through development and demonstration of Used Fuel Unloading, Transfer, and Packaging for long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel. 

Perform as a technical expert in the designated discipline.  Specific duties include:

  • Develop requirements for processes and systems to transfer used CANDU fuel from transportation packages into Used Fuel Containers.
  • Develop and demonstrate automated assembly processes as may be required for manipulation and assembly of radioactive materials.
  • Provide support to architectural / design organizations developing specifications and equipment designs for facilities to package used fuel.
  • Provide support for development of cost updates related to fuel packaging technology as it would apply to large capital projects.
  • Support Safety and Licensing in preparation of Safety Cases by providing necessary input data as well as support the Siting initiatives.
  • Manage multi-disciplinary contracts with multiple stakeholders.
  • Generate technical reports documenting findings and manage workflow through the Team Center (a PC based configuration management system)
  • Support / represent the Engineering Team in regulatory meetings for technical discipline

Identify, define, evaluate, secure and manage external contracts related to the development and demonstration of fuel packaging.  Keep abreast of developments in radioactive waste management technologies through technical publications, contacts with internal and external experts in the field, and conference presentations.  Present results to technical groups, government authorities and national waste management organizations.  Carry out work activities in compliance with legislated and corporate requirements and programs.  Requires a university degree in an engineering or science discipline directly related to the accountabilities of this position.

Requires a minimum of 6 years’ experience in one or more of the following subject areas:

  • Automation of low volume assembly and inspection processes where remote handling is necessary due to the radiological hazard
  • Designing processes and structures to work in radioactive environments.
  • Designing equipment to work in containment, related active areas or areas containing hazardous substances
  • Regulatory/design requirements for Class 1B nuclear facilities

Requires experience in assuming responsibility for projects within the discipline, including work and resource planning, contract management, problem resolution, work monitoring and accomplishment to Supervisor satisfaction.  Also in effectively applying theoretical and practical technical knowledge and sound analytical thinking to solve problems in the appropriate subject areas.  Requires strong and clear oral and written communication skills.  Candidates with lesser qualifications will be considered for a lower level position.  Knowledge of the regulatory requirements surrounding Class 1B nuclear facilities would be beneficial.  This position may require some travel.
