Job Description
  • Performs mechanical engineering assignments by providing engineering calculations, design/drawings and writing equipment specifications to support all aspects of hydro and thermal power generation including additions, upgrades and maintenance of generating units.
  • Performs project management functions involving writing technical specifications, bid evaluations, and contract award and administration as per Corporation guidelines.
  • Prepares project budgets, scheduling and scope, and co-ordinates project execution with construction managers. Strives to make projects successful through proper monitoring and oversight.
  • Makes field and construction management decisions to ensure projects are completed within the stipulated schedule, scope and allocated budget.
  • Collaborates and co-operates with the Electrical Engineering, Operations and Finance departments in completing multi-discipline projects.
  • Provides project updates and reports as required.
  • Assists the Operations department in evaluating changes to equipment and operations and provides recommendations to ensure safety, reliability and availability of equipment.
  • Assists in the development of capital maintenance/upgrading programs for hydro generation, and thermal units including diesel and LNG.
  • Assists in the preparation of mechanical project budgets, short and long range plans for equipment and facilities replacement, retirement, additions, and life extensions.
  • Adheres to the Corporation’s high safety standards by following approved safe working plans, worker administered and operator administered protection plans and wears appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all Corporation information. Adheres to all Corporation policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Other related duties.

Working Conditions

  • The majority of the work is performed in a normal office environment with exposure to outdoor weather, hot, noisy, or cold conditions when working in the field.
  • Must maintain the confidentiality of all corporate information.

  • Travel is required.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Requires a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering with P.Eng. Designation in Canada and must be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Yukon.
  • Experience and knowledge of power utility maintenance and/or operations.
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering theory, design and operating mechanism/parameters of hydro-generator and thermal units.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering codes and standards, and regulations that apply to electrical utility generation facilities.
  • Ability to work independently on engineering projects.
  • Working knowledge of Project Management processes and principles.
  • Ability to perform project manager’s role for electric utility projects.
  • Excellent ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments and outside agents.
  • Ability to create drawings and write specifications, prepare cost estimates, prepare construction contracts and request for proposals.
  • Must be self-motivated and versatile, and thrive on a variety of work.
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license.
